Garry Tan wants US open-weight labs to stop trying to out-train GPT-4 and start distilling it instead. The goal is to flood the market with high-quality, US-made smaller models to keep Chinese open-weight models from winning the dev ecosystem.

For builders, this means better, cheaper, more efficient models.
